Rainfall is inaccurately recorded

  • Updated

Observed behavior

The sensor reports too much, too little, or no rainfall at all.

Possible causes and actions/observations

Something is blocking the movement of the tipping spoon

🔧 Check that:
- the funnel and the spoon are clean
- no dirt or debris has entered the spoon’s axis (don’t hesitate to remove the spoon to make cleaning and inspection easier)
- the wires are not blocking the spoon’s movement and are connected to positions 3 and 4
- the spoon’s circuit board shows no signs of oxidation

🔧This short 2-minute tutorial shows the key steps.

Does the spoon need to be replaced?

🔧  Perform the spoon test:

  1. Pass the magnet over the LED until it flashes red
  2. When the LED stays solid red, tip the spoon 3 times
  3. Check in the app whether the tips are recorded. One tip corresponds to 0.2 mm of rain

🔧 If you still don’t see any rainfall data after performing all the checks above, the spoon may need to be replaced. This article explains how to proceed.

The sensor is too close to an obstacle

🔧 Check the distance between the sensor and the nearby obstacle (building, tree, etc.): the distance between the weather station and any obstacle should be greater than 4 times the height of that obstacle.

If no improvement is observed despite these actions

If you are unsure whether the tipping spoon needs to be replaced, don’t hesitate to contact Weenat Support to verify that the tipping events haven’t been artificially recorded in the management tools (this can happen with certain sensor versions), and/or to send photos of the spoon (tipping part, circuit board, etc.), specifying the sensor number.
