The reliability of the Tensiometer’s measurements is more dependant on the quality of its installation and the right choice of placement area than the sensor itself.
For a good installation, watch these following points:
- Regular and even soil type
- Representative vegetation
- Representative irrigation area
- Depth of the installation
- Multiplication of measurement points
- Good contact between the soil and the Tensiometer
Localized Irrigation
In the case of drip irrigation, it is recommended to install the Tensiometer on the edge of the wet bulb.
Sprinkler Irrigation
Center Pivot / Linear Move
For pivot or linear move irrigation, it is recommended to install the probe near the center of a span. Avoid the first and last spans as well as any overhang areas. If the pivot does not complete a full circle, choose a
representative spot in the middle of a run.
Full Coverage
Avoid overlapping zones and do not install the probe too close to pipelines to prevent measurement errors due to possible leaks. The grey areas on the diagram indicate suitable zones for probe placement.
Hose Reel
The probe should be placed approximately halfway along the gun’s reach.
Avoid the following areas:
- Start and end points of the run
- Edges of the covergae radius
- Overlapping zones
- Immediate vicinity of the gun's path
For optimal placement between two hose reels, position the probe:
- About 60 meters from the edge of the irrigated area
- Ideally between 1/3 and 1/4 of the distance between the two hose reels
